Europe/U.S. Trade Deal: Promise and Reality

Tuesday, March 26th
12 Noon to 1:30 PM
Lunch will be served.

After a year of deliberation the leaders of the European Union and the U.S. have agreed to start a negotiation to expand a market that now accounts for half of global GDP and 30 percent of trade but is challenged by faster-growing economies, mainly in Asia.

Leaders have set the bar very high: it’s to be an ambitious, comprehensive agreement that embraces trade (services, goods and agriculture), investment, and regulatory issues.

Leaders have stressed the need for strong political commitment to get a deal done.

But solving some of the really vexing problems in E.U./U.S. relations – agriculture subsides and market access, deep differences in financial and food safety regulation, Europe’s determination to strengthen personal privacy protection, nagging issues like Europe’s block on U.S. cultural content, and deeply entrenched U.S. maritime protectionism – will demand a strength of political determination that many, on both sides of the Atlantic, doubt can be summoned.

Our panel of stakeholders and analysts will assess, in light of the realities, the agreement’s promise of  a more productive transatlantic relationship that resolves embedded commercial issues, transcends decades of mutual distrust, and creates a new solidarity of purpose.

Speakers:

  • John Herrmann, Partner, Kelly Drye, and former Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for International Trade, National Security Council
  • Thea Mei Lee, Deputy Chief of Staff and Policy Director & Chief International Economist, AFL-CIO
  • Dave Salmonsen, Senior Director, Congressional Relations, American Farm Bureau Federation
  • Michael Smart, Vice President, Rock Creek Global Advisors, LLC, and former International Trade Counsel, Senate Committee on Finance
  • Moderator: Bob Vastine, Senior Industry Fellow, CBPP, Georgetown
