ICYMI: September Discussion Featuring Richard Bennett

During this week’s webinar featuring Richard Bennett, Founder and Publisher of High Tech Forum and co-inventor of Wi-Fi 802.11, the discussion focused on the origins of Wi-Fi, its technical strengths and weaknesses, and the role of unlicensed spectrum within the framework of U.S. spectrum policy. Richard also presented insights and conclusions from his forthcoming research note titled, “Lessons from the History of Wi-Fi.”
Some highlights:
- The FCC has allocated 4 to 7 times more mid-band spectrum for Wi-Fi compared to licensed spectrum. This imbalance poses a significant issue, as fixed wireless access utilizing licensed spectrum is essential for delivering broadband services to most residential areas.
- Wi-Fi should prioritize the utilization of higher millimeter wave frequencies rather than relying on additional mid-band spectrum. This approach will enhance signal coordination and control, facilitate the quicker phase-out of outdated devices, and provide modulation that is more resilient to interference.
- To sustain its leadership in both licensed and unlicensed technologies, the U.S. must shift its focus from excessively allocating spectrum to Wi-Fi and instead increase availability for licensed mobile networks, which are experiencing increasing congestion.
- Wi-Fi is only as good as the broadband connection it is being used with.
