Alex Besen

During this webinar, Alex Besen, Founder & CEO of the Besen Group, joined Carolyn Brandon and Jennifer Fritzsche to discuss market opportunities for stand-alone 5G and private networks, how 5G network slicing figures into the competitive dynamic and how cable and telecom are positioning for a future of connected everything.

Some highlights:

  • Besen defined “private wireless networks” as dedicated networks for businesses, consumers, and enterprises. These networks can mix and match different types of spectrum depending on the specific business or use case they are using the network for.
  • Besen explained that network slicing allows for dynamic sharing of a key resource and is vital in creating successful networks.
  • The Department of Defense (DOD) is the largest private 5G customer today.
  • Because European and other countries have so much less land mass compared to the U.S., they tend to use spectrum in much smaller geographic areas. This fact lends itself to more concentrated network densification.
  • Besen noted that CBRS is only useful indoors, in small areas and at low power.
  • Mr. Besen clarified that Wi-Fi is not a mobile network technology and cannot replace licensed spectrum networks.
  • Besen predicts that system integrators like IBM and KPMG will be the market leaders for system integration.

Little Nuggets of Tech and Telecom — A Lunch Series with Jen and Carolyn is a monthly lunch time discussion series featuring national, international, and local experts from business, law, policy, and economics. For 30 minutes each month, Jen and Carolyn will pose a “What If?” question to analyze different scenarios and factors impacting our sector as they and their guests challenge the status quo on hot topics like how to close the digital divide, the myths of spectrum sharing, and the emerging use cases for 5G that might drive a new wave of growth and innovation in the U.S.
